THE GREATEST STORY OF
GARBAGE STATUES
By European youngsters that really want to make the difference
One of the Generation Europe's focus theme was recycling and sustainability, so in one of the activities, the city rally, it was tasked us to visit an amazing sculpture, actually a really interesting one, not only visually, but also meaningly: a huge and very colorful Iberian lynx made of garbage. This masterpiece was made by the artist Bordalo II, located at Parque das Nações, in Lisbon. The work was inaugurated by António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, after the Lisbon + 21 world conference, which brought together youth ministers from more than 100 countries at Altice Arena to discuss the climate emergency.
In the closing session, Guterres admitted that young people can and must lead this struggle, specially because his generation has failed in responding
to this task. While the secretary general was speaking, outside Bordalo II finished his play, creating art with reused materials, specially with trash cans.
The gigantic plastic ball, located in Cascais, its called "Plastic World" and represents a world made with plastic rubbish found in the oceans, raising
awarness about the preservation of ocean's water quality.
This famous masterpiece is fruit from the work of Carole Purnelle and Nuno Maya. This work won the first edition of ArteMar Estoril, belonging now to Cascais Town Hall and it is in a famous green place, Parque Marechal Carmona.
Those two sculptures inspired us to build our own masterpieces, raising awarness about the trash, mainly plastic, around our environment, specially at the beach and in the ocean. Some of these statues we brought with ourselves to Carcavelos beach, in the day we cleaned the parking lot in front of that beach.
